Mandatory withdrawal button (from 19 June 2026) – and what it means for your AI visibility
In short: Since 19 June 2026, a legally mandated withdrawal button (Widerrufsbutton) is required in German online stores. This new, prominently linked button changes the page structure of many shops – and caused automated crawlers to misread it as a product in some cases. We adjusted our generator's page classification accordingly.
What is the withdrawal button?
Similar to the well-known cancellation button, since 19 June 2026 online retailers must let consumers withdraw from contracts via a clearly labelled, easy-to-find button. It has to be permanently and visibly reachable – in practice it ends up in the footer, the navigation, or on a dedicated, prominently linked page on nearly every shop sub-page.
Why this matters for GEO / llms.txt
An llms.txt generator crawls a shop's pages and assigns every URL to a category (product, category, info, legal …). For AI systems such as ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity to understand your products and prices correctly, this classification has to be right: legal texts and service pages do not belong in the product list.
With the new withdrawal button, additional legal and withdrawal links suddenly appear on very many pages. On some shop systems – e.g. Gambio, where info pages also end in .html – that was enough to make the withdrawal page (and sometimes the homepage) show up under „Products". The cause was an overly generous heuristic that matched product keywords in the page title too.
What we changed
The generator's page classification now distinguishes more strictly – purely based on the URL structure:
- The homepage is never listed as a product (it is already the file's title anyway).
- Withdrawal, terms, privacy and imprint → legal, excluded from the product list.
- Shipping, payment, contact as well as manufacturer and info pages → info/service, cleanly separated from products.
- Wording in the page title no longer causes false matches.
The result: products stay products (on Gambio shops with .html pages even more reliably than before), and the new mandatory legal texts don't dilute your AI product data.
Verified across 5 shops
We tested the change on five different shops (Gambio, Shopware and others): not a single legal, info or homepage is still classified as a product. The daily cron auto-update produces clean files too.
What you should do now
- Make sure your shop has the withdrawal button implemented in a legally compliant way (seek legal advice if in doubt).
- Regenerate your llms.txt so the current page structure is reflected correctly.
- Use the automatic update (cron/plugin) so such structural changes are picked up automatically in the future.
